Why does my swamp cooler smell?

A swamp cooler smells because something in it is growing, decomposing, or burning: fishy and musty smells come from anaerobic bacteria and algae in old pads and stagnant pan water, a swampy smell through the house means saturated pads and poor drainage, and a burning smell means the motor or pump is failing and needs to be shut off.

The fishy smell

The classic fish-house smell is bacteria working in water that has sat too long in the pan and pads. It shows up strongest at first-start in April and May, after a cooler sat all winter with the drain closed. Dump the pan completely, flush it, and run fresh pads. If the smell returns within days on fresh water, the pads are past their life and the pan needs a real cleaning, not just a rinse. The metro's hard water makes scale and biofilm build faster than owners expect.

Musty, moldy, and swampy

A musty smell is algae in the pads; a wet-dog swampy smell through every register is usually pads so saturated they stop evaporating and start smelling. Both are pad and drainage problems. Bleed-off systems that dump a percentage of circulating water are what keep mineral and bacteria levels down; a cooler with a plugged bleed-off smells years younger once the system is cleared. Pad replacement is a normal pad replacement visit, typically among the smaller cooler jobs in the metro.

The smells that mean shut it off

Burning rubber or hot varnish means the blower motor or the pump is failing; shut the cooler off at the switch and request a visit before it takes the pulley or the pump housing with it. An electrical smell means the same thing it means in any appliance: off, then a technician. The cooler repair page covers how diagnosis visits run, and every repair is confirmed and priced by the company doing the work.

Smell plus weak cooling together usually means the pads, the bleed-off, and the pan all need one cleaning-and-pads visit, and that is the visit that fixes the smell permanently. Describe the smell in a few words on the request form and the desk lines up a cooler company that handles smell calls before the season fills up.
